Cross-Reference for 11th Editiion
May 15, 2007 - Most of you already know that we use the Lineman's Handbook for supplimentary information for the Merchant JT&S Program. Since the start of our program, 24 years ago, the handbook has been revised five (5) times. We just discovered that the 11th Edition of the "Lineman's Handbood" has been released. It has been our policy to supply a cross-reference for the "Lineman's Handbook" eliminating the need to purchase a new textbook. The new cross-reference pages will be available next week. The preface of each of our workbooks contain this cross-reference, however, if you need additional information give us a call at 605-697-6587. Sorry for any inconvenience. Dennis Merchant

Along with the special plastisized card will be a special blue seal for your certificate. The seal will also be sent to those who have successfully completed the advanced program at this time.

Metering Delay
Jan 11, 2007 - We have had many people anxious for us to write a training program for metering which will be as strong academically as our powerline program. The program would be administered much like the powerline program as well. We feel that the metering program needs the cooperation of a good manufacturer due to many changes under development in metering. The manufacturer that we selected has been slow to respond, which has created the delay. Until we get the latest of information the progress of the metering program will be delayed. Sorry for any inconvience this may have caused. Merchant

New Clients
Dec 06, 2006 - I failed to notify everyone of new clients we recieved this summer. We want to welcome the Village of Pender, Pender, NE (NEMUN). In November we welcomed Venus Energy, Moorhead, MN (MNCON). We look forward to working with these fine people.

Optional Textbook
Sep 19, 2006 - Our training program believes that our Trainees need good sources of information. In the past we have used the basic electricity textbook, "Electricity 1-7." However, recently this textbook has been in and out of print and handled through different publishers. Our workbooks have the necessary information furnished in the Units of Instruction making it possible to remove the textbook from the "List of Required Textbooks." We notified Training Coordinators of the change in required textbooks unfortunately some did not get this notice. We would like to leave the following basic electricity textbook as an option: "Delmar's Standard Textbook of Electricity", by Herman. We at MJTS feel that a good understanding of basic electricity is important to a good education. If you have questions please give us a call at MJTS (605-697-6587). Note: Some of our clients my want to establish a library of textbooks for Trainees to check-out books.

New Continent
Sep 01, 2006 - We have received applications from Sudan in Africa. We know little about the five (5) new Trainees and their working conditions, but will let you know more when we do.

Metering Progress
Mar 30, 2006 - The new metering program is progressing slow but sure. It appears slow for some people but the complex structure of our program calls for accuracy and many illustrations. Dave is working everyday on the metering. At the present time I'm updating the lineman program, but will go back to metering as well.

Basic Electricity/New Text
Feb 20, 2006 - Most of you know that we use good textbooks, and that a strong academic program will rely on a good textbook. Up to this time we have used "Electricity 1-7." They have given us problems in the past, due to new publishers and new editions. In the past we cross-referenced "Electricity", by Herman, that uses the modern theory of electricity. Their new revised 2nd edition includes transformers and motors. We are working with the University at this time to get a reduced price. Will keep you posted.

Something to Think About
Feb 06, 2006 - In my travels around the country I see sub-divisions with transformers on every pole fed with #6 wpc. I see capacitor banks on-line in off peak times. I experienced a situation where a new mayor for the city complained to the Electric Department until he got his own transformer while being fed from a transformer 60 feet away. If anyone contacts you and states that there is no reason why line personnel need to know and understand Reactance you may want to take into consideration the effect of reactive loads on our system. The IEEE "Power & Energy" magazine (Jan/Feb 2006) has reminded readers that they can expect a dire shortage of technically trained people. We at Merchant Job Training & Safety pledge to maintain a strong academic program. Merchant

New Lineman School
Feb 03, 2006 - Just met the new instructor for the lineman school in Alliance, NE. He starts full time for NWCC in March, so he will have a lot of work to do by May. They are presently looking for another good instructor. If you know of anyone I'm sure they would appreciate the help. The towns and utilities have been very supportive.

New Clients for December
Jan 04, 2006 - Welcome to the people with the City of Gering, NE (NEMUN) and the Kiowa Line builders, Tipton, MO (MOCON). We look forward to working with you.

Policy Change
Jan 04, 2006 - We have a change of policy concerning retesting of finals for each year. Starting January 1, 2006 the retesting of failed tests we have the following change. The recorded score for a retested final will be no greater than 80%. Trainees must pass each final test to move in to the next year of the program. This program is very strong academically. Trainees who take "closed book" tests know the material and have no problems.

November Welcome
Dec 06, 2005 - Welcome to a familiar municipal. Moorhead, MN came into our program in the month of November. We became very familiar with Moorhead when we lived in Arthur, ND.

Ice Storm
Dec 06, 2005 - Dorothy and I just got back from our property in Northern Minnesota. We saw heavy loading of ice all the way from Brookings, SD to Fergus Falls, MN. We saw trucks from people all over the country. We wish the best for all of the people involved. Work Safe and thank you. Speaking as an old retired lineman I can say that in a storm I feel as though I should be out there helping you.

International Update
Oct 26, 2005 - Marisol de Najera from Guatemala has sent us an update on his people enrolled into the MJTS program from Central America. They have 11 Trainees enrolled from Honduras, 24 Trainees enrolled from Nicaragua, and 55 enrolled from Belize. Marisol and his people have been a pleasure to work with. We all wish them well.

Metering Program
Oct 13, 2005 - Thanks to all the people that have inquired about our work on the new Metering Program. The RECs in North Dakota have given us a real kick start by turning over their materials as well. From time to time we will give you a progress report at this site. We have a lot of work before we can have a good 4 year program.

Substation Program
Oct 13, 2005 - Many people will ask about our metering progress and in the same breath ask if we have a Substation Program. With all the interest we have had I'm sure that we will start on a Substation Program as soon as possible. However, we need to get the metering program to a more advanced stage. Will keep you posted on this progam as well. We have several people working on curriculum at this time.

Welcome Again!
Oct 06, 2005 - Another branch of the Davis H. Elliot Company has joined the Merchant Program. Welcome to the Davis H. Elliot Company, Shreaveport, LA (LACON).

Sorry Not Possible!
Sep 27, 2005 - We can not enroll people into the middle of the program. This has been our policy for the last decade. From time to time we have had supervisors request help by enrolling their people somewhere in the middle of the program because of their previous experience. This is not possible due to structure of the curriculum. We can understand how this could be a problem for the utility, so my response is to encourage the trainee to finish the program they are currently enrolled. Sorry for any inconvience this may cause! Keeping in mind that with a strong academic curriculum it is not possible to jump into the middle of the program.

New Metering Program--Update
Sep 27, 2005 - We have had considerable interest in a metering program, so at present we have joined ranks to come up with a correspondence program similar to our lineman program. Dave, our engineer, has taken on the full time job to get it done with my assistance. We get calls daily asking for the time table. Today we have had 2 more utilities request information and leaving their name for contact at completion. We have set a tenitive date one more year from now. I will try to do a better job at updating "Whats New."

A New Lineman School
Dec 14, 2004 - We understand that many of our clients have been harrassed by a linemen school from the western part of the United States. We appologize for any inconvenience they may have caused our people. We feel there is need for good linemen schools, but they need to take better care of the people they have. We believe in good schools! We, along with the RECs in the area, are helping start a new linemen school in Alliance, Nebraska. They are very concerned about serving the needs of industry.

E-mail Communications
Jan 28, 2004 - SPAM problems!!! Until they come out with a better way to discriminate the trash on the e-mail messages be careful that all your messages get through to us. We have several hundred SPAM that we now filter out. Good information can get thrown out by accident. If you want to use E-mail make sure we have your name in our address book. Also, a good way to catch our eye is to place "MJTS" in the subject matter.

Advanced Program
Jan 28, 2004 - We are making good progress on the new advanced program. We plan to have the workbook and the tests ready by this spring. We will be making a formal announcement at that time. Oct 23, 2003 - The 3rd Edition of "Electricity 1-7" is now available. Biggest change to the textbook is colorizing of the pictures and diagrams. This is good from the standpoint of cross-referencing. However, a new cross-reference for the book will be available on the Objective Sheet of each Unit of Instruction. Cost is from $68.00 to $85.00, so shop around or contact MJTS for information. You may also qualify for discount pricing.

We are looking forward to working with these fine people.

"Electriicity 1-7"/3rd Edition
Sep 08, 2003 - We stated earlier that the publishers of the basic electricity textbook "Electricity 1-7" would be out with a new edition (3rd edition). Unfortunately, like all publishers, they will hold off on the new edition until all of the older editions have been removed from the market. We have found this to be true in particular with the "Lineman's Handbook." However, this should not interfere with your purchase of the textbooks that we have on our list of required textbooks. When the new editions are released we immediately make a cross-reference for our workbooks. We have the new edition on special order. Note: Our workbooks have a cross-reference for the last four (4) editions of the "Lineman's Handbook."

Basic Electricity/New Edition
Aug 27, 2003 - Our list of required textbooks recommends "Electricity 1-7" for basic electricity. The 2nd edition is no longer available and the 3rd edition is currently in production and not available at this time. We have a special order direct for the new book, so that we can make a cross-reference to the new book. We have an alternate book for basic electricity which is as follows: "Delmar's Standard Textbook of Electricity" 2nd edition, by Herman. This is a good textbook although more costly. Our program is more designed around Electricity 1-7. We have a cross-reference for the alternate book. If you need help give MJTS a call.

We saw demonstrations involving work with live-line equipment, and the related safety applications. We saw many old friends that we are working with from throughout the United States. We also met many people from throughout the world. We were particularly interested in the training that a utility was offering to their people in Argentina. Progress Energy sponsored the meeting at Orlando. Their employees did a great job, and made us feel right at home.

New Assist
Feb 06, 2003 - Trainees in the 4th year of the program may want to check out the new interactive transformer connection located in Unit of Instruction 7-7B. This connection can be located under "Assistance" in the home page. From the 4th year workbook the transformer connection can be found In Section 4-3, and identified as T20 in Assignment Sheet #1.
