About the Program

Merchant's Powerline Job Training & Safety Program is a distance-learning curriculum tailor-made for entry-level electric utility personnel. The program most commonly serves as related technical instruction for use in an apprenticeship program leading to journeyman certification when coupled with structured on-the-job training.

It exceeds the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship minimum requirement of 144 hours of related instruction per year. The program is also well suited for skill advancement of experienced employees with duties ranging from line personnel through management.

Trainees study one section at a time, complete the assignment sheets, and check answers in the back of the workbook. When they are ready to proceed, they take a section test. The test is closed book and taken online or administered by their Training Coordinator, and fax or email the answer sheet to the MJTS office for grading. If the test is taken online, the result is immediately available. Tests faxed or emailed in are returned as soon as possible, usually within 15 minutes.
